How to get your business quoted by AI search answers

People now ask assistants instead of scrolling results. Here is how to write pages that those answers can actually quote — without gaming anything.

The short answer

To be quoted by AI answers, write pages that answer one clear question each, put the direct answer in the first two sentences, use plain question-shaped headings, publish concrete facts such as prices, areas and timings, add a short questions-and-answers section, and mark up your pages with structured data. Assistants quote sources that state things plainly and verifiably.

Search has changed shape. A growing share of people type a full question and read one answer instead of comparing ten blue links. That answer is assembled from pages a model can read, trust and summarise. Being one of those pages is mostly a writing problem, not a technical one.

Answer first, explain second

Put the direct answer in the opening two sentences, before any background. Assistants lift short, self-contained passages; an answer buried in paragraph nine rarely survives the summary.

One page, one question

A page trying to cover six topics answers none of them well. "How much does a bathroom fit cost in Bristol?" is a page. "Our services" is not.

Use headings shaped like questions

Write the heading the way a customer would say it out loud. It makes the page easier to scan for humans and easier to match for machines.

Publish facts, not adjectives

"Competitively priced, fast and friendly" tells a model nothing to quote. "From £450, usually completed in two days, covering Bristol and Bath" is quotable, checkable and far more persuasive to a person too.

Add a short questions section

Three to six genuine questions with straight answers at the foot of the page. Mark them up with structured data so the meaning is explicit rather than inferred.

Make the page technically readable

  • Real text, not text inside images.
  • A working, up to date sitemap so new pages are discovered.
  • Structured data for your organisation, your articles and your questions.
  • A description that summarises the page honestly rather than advertising it.

Keep it honest, because errors travel

An assistant will repeat whatever you publish. A stale price or an old opening time does not just mislead one reader — it becomes the answer everybody is given. Put a review date in your calendar for any page containing a number.

The pages that get quoted are the ones that read like a knowledgeable person answering the question directly. There is no trick underneath it.

How to check whether it is working

Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask, and see who gets quoted. If it is a competitor, read their page: nine times out of ten it simply answers the question more plainly than yours does.

Common questions

What is answer engine optimisation?
It is writing and structuring pages so AI assistants and search summaries can quote them accurately — clear questions, direct answers, concrete facts and structured data.
Does AEO replace normal SEO?
No. It sits on top of it. Pages still need to be crawlable, fast and linked, but the writing style shifts towards answering one question plainly.
How do I know if an AI assistant is citing my site?
Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask and see which sources they name. Repeat it monthly, since answers change as pages change.
